Бизнесмен, финансист. Начал карьеру продавцом в г. Трой, шт. Нью-Йорк. Сделал состояние на оптовой торговле продуктами питания и различных спекуляциях. Деловой партнер Дж. Гулда [Gould, Jay]. Контролировал компанию "Вестерн юнион" [Western Union]. Оставил наследство стоимостью около 70 млн. долларов, которые его вдова Маргарет Сейдж [Sage, Margaret Olivia Slocum] (1828-1918) использовала для создания фонда и колледжа, носящих его имя [Russell Sage Foundation; Russell Sage College], а также для оказания помощи многим организациям, в том числе Ассоциации молодых христиан (ИМКА) [Young Men's Christian Association]
